Northern Soul

Northern Soul
   Nothern Soul is better described as a subculture rather than a musical genre. Based around clubs such as the Wigan Casino and the Torch in Stokeon-Trent, the first flowerings of the scene began in the late 1960s, when clubs in the north of England would hold ‘all-nighters’ with the DJs playing obscure American rockabilly and R&B records. With the popularity of the Tamla Motown and Stax record labels came a shift in the playlists to a purely ‘soul’ sound, hence the name. Unknown in the south of the country, Northern Soul clubs quickly gained cult status in the 1970s and 1980s, and gave rise to the enduring popularity of artists such as Jackie Wilson, James Brown and Wilson Pickett.
